Zevli is published by MSR Technology Pty Ltd (ACN 697 828 023), Melbourne, Australia. This page says what the Zevli app and this website do with information, in plain words. If anything here is unclear, write to info@zevli.co.
The short version
- Zevli has no accounts. It never asks for your name, your email address or your phone number.
- Your pet's profile is kept on your phone. Its name, photo, breed, birthday, allergies, sensitivities and priorities are never sent to us.
- Zevli has no advertising and runs no analytics of its own. We do not sell information or share it for marketing. On Android, the barcode scanner is a Google component that reports to Google. That is explained below.
- A few things do leave your phone so the app can work. They are listed below, with how long each is kept.
What stays on your phone
These are stored on your phone and are not sent to Zevli:
- Each pet's name, photo, breed, date of birth, sex and notes
- Each pet's allergies, sensitivities, the things it avoids and your priorities
- The history of your pet's weight
- The list of foods you have saved
Zevli checks a food against your pet's allergies on your phone. We send the app what each food's label says, and your phone compares it with your pet's list. We never learn what your pet is allergic to.
The list of saved foods is never sent. Opening a saved food looks it up again, like any other food.
Deleting the app deletes all of this. If your phone backs itself up, your pets and saved foods may be included in that backup, under your own Apple or Google account, so they can come back on a new phone.
What the app sends to Zevli
When you look up a food. The barcode or the food's id, and whether your active pet is a dog or a cat.
When you search. The words you type, as you type them, and whether your active pet is a dog or a cat. Search is part of Zevli Plus.
When you ask for a daily amount or a plan for changing foods. The food, and your pet's species, life stage, weight, body condition and activity level. We work out the answer and do not keep those details.
When you have recorded what your pet eats now. The two foods, so the app can tell you whether they are the same food.
When a barcode isn't in Zevli. The app first asks us whether we already know that barcode is missing. A few seconds after telling you the food isn't there, it sends the barcode to us by itself, so the food can be added. It sends it again if you tap Request this product. The same happens if a food you open, such as one you saved, is no longer in Zevli. The time, and a random id for your copy of the app, go with it.
When you ask for a food by name. The words you typed.
When you send a photo of a pack. The photo, which food it is of, what kind of photo it is, the time it was taken or added, and the same random id.
When you open an explanation. Which ingredient or figure you tapped. Nothing about the food or your pet goes with it.
No request carries your name, an email address, your location, a contact list or an advertising id.
The random id
The first time it is needed, the app makes a random id for your copy of the app. It is not made from your phone, your Apple or Google account, or anything else about you. It is sent only with a barcode Zevli doesn't have and with a pack photo. It lets us count how many different people have asked for a food, and keep the photos for one food together.
We remove the id from our records 90 days after it arrives.
On Android the id is left out of your phone's backup, so it does not follow you to a new phone. On iPhone, restoring a whole phone from a backup brings the id back with everything else.
Photos of packs
Before a photo leaves your phone, the app redraws it, shrinking it if it is large, cuts out the parts of the file where a camera records a location, a model and a date, and deletes the copy it was given. The time the photo was taken or added is sent beside it, as a separate detail.
A photo is still a photograph. Whatever is in the frame behind the pack is in it.
Your photo is read by an automated service, provided by OpenAI, which turns the words on the pack into text. A person at Zevli then checks it before anything in Zevli changes. We do not send the random id to OpenAI. We never publish a photo you send, and we never use one as a food's picture.
We delete a photo 90 days after a person has dealt with it. We keep the text that was read from the pack.
The barcode scanner on Android
On Android phones, the scanner is built on a component made by Google, called ML Kit. Google says the component sends it information about the device and the app, how well the component worked, and any errors, with an identifier for that installation, for diagnostics and usage analytics. Google says the pictures and barcodes themselves are handled on your phone. This goes from your phone to Google. It does not pass through Zevli and we do not receive it.
On iPhone, the scanner uses Apple's own software on the phone.
Internet addresses
Like every service on the internet, ours sees the address your phone connects from. We use it for a short time, in memory, to stop any one caller overloading the service. We do not store it in our database or in our records of requests. If a request arrives while the service is restarting, our web server may note the address in an error record, which is kept for up to five weeks.
How long things are kept
| What | Kept for |
|---|---|
| Your pet's details sent for a daily amount or a plan | Not kept |
| Our record that a request was made, and when | 14 days. It does not say which food or what you searched for |
| The random id on a scan or a photo | 90 days |
| A photo of a pack | 90 days after a person has dealt with it |
| The barcode of a food Zevli doesn't have, and when it was scanned | Kept, so we know which foods to add. Once the random id is removed, nothing on it points to your copy of the app |
| Search words that found nothing | 12 months, with nothing that points to you |
| A food you ask for by name | Kept, with nothing that points to you, so we know which foods to add |
| The words read from a pack photo, such as the ingredient list | Kept. They are about the food, not about you |
Who else handles it
We use a small number of companies to run Zevli. Each sees only what it needs.
- DigitalOcean runs our server and stores product pictures and pack photos, in Sydney. Your phone fetches product pictures from it directly and sends pack photos to it directly, so it sees your phone's internet address when that happens.
- Supabase holds our databases, in Sydney.
- OpenAI reads the words on pack photos. It is based in the United States, so a photo you send is processed outside Australia.
- Google receives the diagnostic information described above from the barcode scanner on Android phones.
- GitHub hosts this website. If you visit it, GitHub sees your internet address, as any website host does.
We do not give information to pet food brands, stores, advertisers or data brokers.
Zevli Plus
Zevli Plus is not on sale yet. When it is, payment will be taken by Apple or Google, not by us, and we will not see your card details. We will update this page before then to say exactly what is shared to manage a subscription.
Children
Zevli is not aimed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
Your choices
- You can use Zevli without adding a pet.
- Deleting a pet removes that pet's details and photo from your phone. Deleting the app removes everything. If your phone backs itself up, a deleted pet stays in the last backup until the next one runs.
- You can refuse camera or photo access. Scanning needs the camera. Photos can be taken with it or chosen from your library, and are always optional.
- You do not have to send a photo. The app tells you before you add a photo that it will be sent.
Because we do not know who you are, we usually cannot find the records that came from your phone. If you would like a photo or a scan removed sooner than the times above, write to info@zevli.co with the barcode and roughly when you sent it, and we will do our best to find and delete it.
